Carols by Candlelight
⭐ National IconAustralia's most famous Christmas carol event, Carols by Candlelight is held annually at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne and broadcast nationally on television. Organised by Vision Australia, the event raises vital funds for Australians who are blind or have low vision.
The event began in 1938, when radio broadcaster Norman Banks was moved by the sight of an elderly woman sitting alone, listening to carols in the dark. He organised the first community candlelight carol sing at Alexandra Gardens — and an Australian institution was born. Today, the event features Australia's biggest musical stars, a full orchestra, thousands of audience members holding candles, and a television audience of millions.
The atmosphere at Carols by Candlelight is truly extraordinary. As night falls over the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Melbourne's warm December evening, thousands of tiny flames flicker in the audience while world-class performers deliver iconic Christmas carols. It's one of Australia's most moving and beautiful experiences.
